Bauwelt is one of the leading German architectural magazine published every two weeks. AsStadtBauwelt last issue of each quarter focusses on current urban planning issues curated by the vice editor-in-chief of Bauwelt Kaye Geipel. First published in 1910 Bauwelt has its registered office in Berlin. With a total print run of approximately 12,000 copies, it features the largest job vacancy section of all German-language architectural and urban design journals. Bauwelt reports in a politically independent, critical, demanding and unbiased manner about contemporary architecture in Europe and around the world. Located in Gütersloh, the publisher of Bauwelt is known by the name Bauverlag BV GmbH and comprises 18 magazines on the subject of building topics. Boris Schade-Bünsow has been editor-in-chief of Bauwelt since March 2011.

Dr Xiangning Li is full professor in history, theory and criticism at Tongji University’s, College of Architecture and Urban Planning. He is also assistant dean and director of international programmes there. He was a visiting scholar at MIT in 2006 and lectured in universities and institutes including Harvard University, Princeton University and the University of Southern California. As a critic, he is the Vice President and secretary General of architectural Review Committee of Architectural Society of China, and he is also a member of the International Committee of Architectural Critics. He has published widely on contemporary architecture and urbanism in China and he is the editor-in-chief of Architecture China, an international architectural magazine about contemporary architecture culture in China. Professor Li wasa curatorial committee member for the 2007 Shenzhen Biennale and 2008 Shanghai Biennale. He was curator of the exhibition of ‘From Research to Design’ in 2012 Milan Triennale, 2013 Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-City Biennale, 2013 West Bund Architecture and Contemporary Art Biennial, 2017 Shanghai Urban Space Art Season. He was also the curator of the China Pavilion at the Architectural Biennale Venice 2018.

Profile 

Markus Lauber is responsible for our international projects in China. He previously held a senior position at a local project developer in Beijing. He has been working as an architect outside Germany since 1999, initially in Barcelona, as of 2009 for Drees & Sommer in Madrid, in Andermatt, and from 2012 as General Manager in Beijing. Markus Lauber studied at the University of Stuttgart, ETH Zurich and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Barcelona (UPC).

Profile

Steven Smit is a licensed architect in The Netherlands and Australia with 25 years of experience.  Steven Smit was appointed Director MVRDV Asia in 2019. He is responsible for the growth of MVRDV Asia and the quality delivery of MVRDV projects in the Asian region. Steven’s career started in Sydney Australia on landmark waterfront and high rise projects. In 2002 Steven relocated to China to lead projects with international architecture firms based in Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong and Chengdu. Steven held director roles on international award-winning land mark projects over a 15 year period. Career highlights include participation in the 2004 Venice Architecture Biennale as PTW China Director (Beijing National Aquatic Centre “Watercube“ project) and as senior architect with OMA for the delivery of the CCTV Headquarters Tower in Beijing. Steven has been an invited guest critic at a number of Chinese Architecture schools from 2010 onwards (including Tongji University Shanghai).

Profile

Liu has been invited to participate in a variety of major international architecture and art exhibitions, such as ‘Alors, La Chine?’ at Centre Pompidou in 2003, “New Chinese Architecture” Exhibition at Venice Biennale of Architecture 2010 and Milano Trinnale 2012. Liu has lectured in many universities and museums, such as Tongji University, Southeast University, Tianjin University, Central Academy of Fine Arts, University of Hong Kong, Harvard Graduate School of Design, Architectural Institute of France, Museum of Architecture and Legacy of France (Palais de Chaillot), Beijing Centre of GSAPP and Shanghai Contemporary Art Museum. Liu’s works, with Long Museum West Bund as the most representative, have won a number of architectural awards, including the Honorable Prize of “The 7th Far Eastern Architectural Design Award”, Architectural Review’s Award for Emerging Architecture, the Gold Prize in the ASC Architecture Creation Awards for Public Architecture in 2016 and the Honor Award Best in Show for Architecture 2019 from AIA’s China Chapter. The office was recognized as one of 10 Design Vanguards 2011 by Architectural Record and received an Honorable Prize of the 2010 New Chinese Architecture Award by AS.Architecture-Studio of France.

Profile

Doreen Heng Liu is a Chinese architect born in Guangzhou. She received her MArch from UC Berkeley in 1994 and Doctor of Design at Harvard Graduate School of Design in 2008. 
Her design works have been awarded and published in many international and domestic professional magazines including Architectural Record, Domus, Volume, Abitare and exhibited in various architectural and art exhibitions internationally including Venice, Berlin, Rotterdam, Vienna and many more. In 2014, Doreen was nominated as Curator for the Hong Kong Pavilion at the 14th International Architecture Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia. In 2015, she was nominated as Chief Curator for Shenzhen Hong Kong Urbanism and Architecture Bi-city Biennial. Since September 2008, Doreen has been teaching at the School of Architecture, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). In academic year 2015-16, Doreen was appointed as Guest Professor at D-ARCH, ETH. In fall 2019, Doreen was appointed as Friedman Visiting Professor of Practice at University of California – Berkeley.

Prof. WU Siegfried Zhiqiang, a leading urban designer and planner, is devoted to sustainable urban design and AI supported urban planning. He advocates urban design innovation both in practice and in methodology for global urban sustainability. Prof. WU achieved his doctor’s degree in urban and regional planning at Technical University of Berlin in 1994 with his doctoral dissertation about “Globalization of Metroplis at the Millennium”. Prof. WU is Vice President of TONGJI University, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), Academician of German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech), Academician of Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Science (IVA) and Honorary Fellow of American Institute of Architects (Hon. FAIA). Prof. WU serves as Co-Chair of International Steering Committee of World Planning School Congress, Permanent Member of UNESCO-UIA (International Union of Architects), Member of Advisory Committee - Creative Economy –United Nations Special Unit for South-South Cooperation, UNDP and Vice President of Urban Planning Society of China. Prof. WU is Chief Planner of World EXPO Shanghai 2010 and Qingdao World Horticultural Exhibition 2014. He is also the Chief Planner of the Earthquake Placement Plan in Sichuan and the Chief Planner of urban design concept for the Subcenter of Tongzhou in Beijing.

Ya-Hsin Chen graduated from the architecture department of Tam-Kang University Taiwan in 2001 being awarded the Taiwan National Golden Award for Architecture. In 2005 she received her Master degree in architecture at TU Delft. She worked as an urban designer and architect at KAAP3 ontwerpbureau in Rotterdam, Loxodrome Architects and Planners in Venlo and Foster and Partners in London.  
In 2010 Ya-Hsin Chen joined KCAP as representative of KCAP China. In 2014 she was appointed associate and 2018 associate partner. She is responsible for the office management of KCAP Shanghai and KCAP’s projects in Asia. Through more than 10 years’ practice in China, Ya-Hsin has successfully brought KCAP’s multi-disciplinary approach to complex challenges in Asian cities. The projects range in scales and context, from strategic masterplanning, urban regeneration to waterfront development. 
 Ya-Hsin is regularly invited as lecturer at planning institutes and legal authorities. In 2015, she was guest professor at China Art Academy in Hangzhou and previously guest critic at HKU and Tam-Kang University in Taiwan.

Profile

Professor Zhang Li (Li Brian Zhang / Brian Chang), is Dean at the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. There, he founded the design research laboratory Atelier TeamMinus in 2001, where he still works as leading architect. Furthermore, Zhang Li is Editor-in-Chief of the renowned Chinese magazine World Architecture. At the same time he is board member of the Architectural Society of China (ASC). Zhang Li’s research focusses on pre-industrial oriental philosophy and its contemporary reinterpretation. As an advocator of the ‘Soft Sustainability’ concept, he developed a design idea in relationship with the space and the human body. Abroad, he has been a Visiting Professor (2017) in the Polytechnic University of Turin, Professor of Practice (2012) in Syracuse University and the Visiting Critic (2010) in the National University of Singapore. He has also taught joint-studio projects in a number of institutions, including GSD, Harvard; Barcelona School of Architecture, UPC; Berlage Institute in the Netherlands. Zhang Li has been a keynote speaker or guest panellist at different international events, including ArchiLab 2002 (Orléans, France), Sensual City 2009 (Paris, France), Datum KL 2011 (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) and ISAIA 2012 (Gwangju, Korea). He moderated the Tsinghua Session in the 2012 Pritzker Beijing Architecture Forum. From 2014 to 2015, he was the director of Venue Planning and Sustainability in Beijing’s bid for the Winter Games 2022.

Ye Yang is the director of the editorial office of the international known architecture magazine World Architecture (WA), which was founded in October 1980 and is directed by Tsinghua University. It is bilingual, published monthly, and distributed worldwide. WA is one of the largest architectural magazines in China. Before her thriving career as a journalist, Ye Yang was a heritage conservator after her master’s degree study on architectural history. Since the genesis of the International Urban Project Award, Ye Yang contributes her expertise to this German-Chinese cooperation. Also in the name of WA, she hosts lectures, organizes various exhibitions and competitions. WA is one of the most influential platforms of architecture ideas in contemporary China, and facilitates in-depth architecture debates in focusing on hot issues both inside and outside China. In 2002, WA set up the bi-annual WA Award for Chinese Architecture (WAACA). 

Profile 

WANG Hao, born in 1978, is the co-founder of Untitled Architects . He graduated from Tongji University in 2002 and University of Stuttgart, Germany in 2006. In 2011, he founded “Anonymous Architects” studio. In 2013, he held a solo exhibition “Experimental Series of Vernacular Dwellings” at the Shanghai Design Center. In the same year, he won the German BAUWELT debut award. He participated in the Shanghai Urban Space Art Season in 2015. Since 2015, he has been a guest lecturer at the School of Architecture and Art, China Academy of Art. He participated in the 15th Venice Biennale in 2016. He is also the co-founder of Bau-Workshop, a civil work camp that seeks to rebuild the residential buildings and promotes residential research and timber structure design. Rùn Atelier advocates that the design starts with daily aesthetics and independent thinking, and implements the architectural concept of "people and houses mutual support". In contrast to traditional humanities, we take the ancient and modern craftsmanship, respect the law of natural symbiosis, and carefully create the beauty of the text and return to the original and contemporary  "Rùn" living aesthetics.

Hieronimus Nickl graduated from the degree course in architecture at Erfurt University of Applied Sciences in 2003. In 2008, he completed an MBA programme in International Hospital and Healthcare Management at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management with a master’s degree. Hieronimus joined Nickl & Partner Architekten in 2003 and has specialized since 2005 as a project manager and team leader in international projects. Since April 2015 he is general manager of Nickl & Partner Architectural Design Consulting Co.,Ltd in Beijing, China. In the same year Hieronimus became board member of Nickl & Partner Architekten AG. Since 2019 he is also the managing director of Nickl Architekten Deutschland GmbH.

Profile

Chris Bosse, Tobias Wallisser and Alexander Rieck founded LAVA in 2007. It was established as a network with offices in Sydney, Stuttgart and Berlin. This international network of leading architects uses the latest research and technology to build efficient, sustainable beautiful structures. Educated in Germany and Switzerland, Bosse bases his work on the computerized study of organic structures and resulting spatial conceptions. His award-winning design projects have won Bosse an international reputation as a new generation architect who pushes the boundaries of traditional structure and architecture by digital and experimental form-finding. Whilst Associate Architect at PTW in Sydney Bosse was a key designer of the Beijing Olympics Watercube, winner of the Atmosphere Award at the 9th Venice Architecture Biennale. The following year he received the Emerging Architect RIBA award, in 2012 Perspective's 40 Under 40 for Asia’s rising design stars and an Australian Design Honour in 2015. LAVA was the 2016 Laureate of the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. Alongside his architectural practice, Bosse is Adjunct Professor at the University of Technology, Sydney and lectures worldwide.

Profile

Holds a Bachelor degree in Architecture from the Beijing Institute of Civil Engineering and Architecture, and a Master’s degree in Architecture from Pratt Institute, New York, USA. He used to work in one of the biggest state-owned design enterprises, Beijing Institute of Architectural Design (BIAD) after living and studying in the United States for almost 5 years. Hao is a co-founder and the managing director of Crossboundaries’ Beijing office. 
Crossboundaries’ major projects include the Affiliated High School of Peking University, Chaoyang Future School, Aimer Lingerie Factory, Beijing Zhengtong BMW Museum, Soyoo Joyful Growth Center, Family box, Jiangsu Beisha & Shuoji Kindergartens etc. Crossboundaries’ work has been published across a range of leading industry magazines and is also frequently featured in online design media. We have received multiple international accolades, most recently including the 2018 and 2019 German Design Award, 2018 Architizer A+Award, 2018 Architecture MasterPrize, nominated for 2019 Architectural MasterPrize – eduction projects, nominated for 2021 DAM Prize, was selected as the“AD 100 designers”of year 2015 and 2017 as well as 2019. Hao has written for FT China’s education column, and is teaching at Tsinghua University, Peking University and the Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA), as well as participating as juror for the Architizer A+ AMP Architecture Masterprize Awards. Recently he has also taught Design Thinking at several innovative educational organizations, including the Affiliated High School of Peking University, China campus of the United World College, Moonshot Academy and IDEAS camp for younger students.

Stephan Rewolle, born in 1967 Born in Skive, Denmark, studied Architecture at TU Braunschweig in Germany as well in Graz, Austria and at the Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen, Denmark. In 1996 he joined Gerkan, Marg and Partners. Eight years later he got head of their office in Beijing in China. Over the years at gmp he has managed numerous prestigious projects, including the Chinese National Museum in Beijing, the Southern Railway Station in Hangzhou, and the Tianjin Binhai Cultural Center. Since 2010 Stephan Rewolle is Associate partner of von Gerkan, Marg and Partners.

Profile

Xu Tiantian is the founding principal of DnA _Design and Architecture. She has received numerous awards such as the WA China Architecture Award in 2006 and 2008, the Architectural League New York’s Young Architects Award in 2008, and the Design Vanguard Award in 2009 by Architecture Record and the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architect in 2019. She has built a number of projects, such as Songzhuang Art Center and Ordos Art Museum. In the past years she has been engaged extensively in the rural revitalizing process in Songyang and Zhejiang Province. Her groundbreaking “architectural acupuncture” is a holistic approach to the social and economic revitalization of rural China and has been selected by UN Habitat as the case study of Inspiring Practice on Urban-Rural Linkages. Xu Tiantian received her masters in architecture and urban design from Harvard Graduate School of Design, and her baccalaureate in architecture from Tsinghua University in Beijing.

Profile

Educated both in China and in the US, Chang received Master of Architecture degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1984. Since 1992, he has been practicing in China and established Atelier Feichang Jianzhu (FCJZ) with Lijia Lu in 1993. He has won a number of prizes, such as First Place in the Shinkenchiku Residential Design Competition in 1986, a Progressive Architecture Citation Award in 1996, the 2000 UNESCO Prize for the Promotion of the Arts, and the Academy Award in Architecture from American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2006, and 2016 China Architecture Media Award Excellence in Practice Prize. 2019, FCJZ has been recognized as one of the 100+ Best Architecture Firms 2019 by Domus magazine. Recently, Jishou Art Museum has won the American Institute of Architects (AIA) 2020 Architecture Award and the ArchDaily China Building of the Year 2020 Award. He participated in many international exhibitions of art and architecture, including six times in the Venice Biennale since 2000. He has taught at various architecture schools in the USA and China; he was a Professor and Founding Head of Graduate Center of Architecture at Peking University from 1999 to 2005; he held the Kenzo Tange Chair at Harvard GSD in 2002, the Eliel Saarinen Chair at Michigan in 2004, and between 2005 and 2010, he headed the Architecture Department at MIT. He was also a Pritzker Prize Jury member from 2011 to 2017.

Prof Song is Co-founder and principal of SUP Atelier in Beijing. He is also Professor at the School of Architecture at Tsinghua University since 2008. Prof. Song researches on sustainable theory and design within the scope of architecture, urban studies, and building technology, while highly promoting the combination of modern design and vernacular architecture in China. He is one of the leading academic in the sustainable architecture in china and his book holistic design of architecture with ecological concerns becomes the milestone for Chinese sustainable architectural research. He is key consultant for government and authorities. He works as secretary-general of the Green Building’s Theoretical and Practical Group, Chinese Green Building Committee. His also embrace the architectural practice for over 20 years. Projects have been awarded worldwide, including gold medal at ARCASIA award of Architecture, winner of engineering prize on World Architecture Festival, first prize of Excellent design award of Ministry of Education in China, “project of the year” on Architizer Award.

Profile

Born in Japan and raised in America, Satoshi Ohashi has worked globally in New York, London, Paris and Tokyo. He has worked and collaborated closely with Zaha Hadid since 1987. He is currently a Senior Associate at Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) directing the Beijing studio. ZHA is a British international architecture and design firm founded by Zaha Hadid in 1980, with its main office situated in London. In 2002 her former associate Patrik Schumacher became her business partner. In 2014, she was the first woman to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize. She was awarded the Japanese Praemium Imperiale art prize in 2009. Her architectural style can be described as flowing or kinetic. Patrik Schumacher defines her style as parametric, meaning that it has an‘eleganc e of orderly complexity that gives an impression of seamless fluidity’. Over time, her designs became ‘more organic and more flowing’ such as the first building she designed in China, the Guangzhou Opera House, which was completed in 2010. These earlier works have been described as both ‘archaic and futuristic’. In 2015, around 400 architects worked for ZHA on more than 950 projects in 44 countries. Zaha Hadid died in March 2016.

Profile

Jens Kump is the HPP Partner and German registered architect with the membership in the Saxon State Architects Association. He holds a master's degree in architecture from the Dresden University of Technology. In 1999, he joined HPP and was in charge of German and large international projects. According to the HPP global developing strategy, he came to China to establish the Shanghai office of HPP in 2006. With more than 20-year experiences in architecture design and practical project management, he has led the design teams in Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen to complete many large-scale projects in China and Asia Pacific market, since becoming the HPP partner in 2014. In the more than ten-year design practice in China, Mr. Kump has devoted to his career of architecture with the rigour of the German attitude and the strong passion for China. He brings his international vision, innovation of sustainable development and techniques to china. As the chief designer, he has achieved various scales of architectural design as well as quality control of projects, including culture and education, sports, office, complex, TOD, urban renovation and refurbishment. He was nominated as an international candidate for the annual award of “Shanghai Design Capital”. He has been invited to be an expert judge member of the government's international projects.
